NOTES FROM
THE DIRECTOR
Impressions poses the question - Is it more important for your partner to see you as you wish to be seen, or to see you as you truly are? When approaching this short, my main goal was to explore this theme seriously, but not “dramatically.” Instead, I set out to strike a delicate balance between the absurd and the serious. Our motto on set was: the absurd taken seriously.
That’s what I feel the difference is between my taste and parody - I never want the joke to take us out of the character’s desires or motives - and even if the joke is broad, it should still be specific to that character. Everything should service them, and in turn, the theme. In writing "Impressions", Colin and I were careful to never undercut the emotion of a scene, but support it - walking the tightrope between honoring the theme but keeping the absurd tone. If "New Girl" went on an "Airplane!" Get it?
